For the character of Esther, I took inspiration from historical pictures of Freedman and boarding houses for Black women. I wanted to capture her simplistic, yet sophisticated nature through a neutral color palette that is in direct contrast to Mrs. Van Buren.
As a socialite of the 1900s, I wanted Mrs. Van Buren's aesthetic to mimic the aesthetic of the women she snubs her nose at, but secretly admires. I pulled inspiration from saloon women, suffragettes, and the color palette was directly inspired by Marie Antoinette.
